You’ve already decided you want an impact garage door. Smart move. Now comes the part most homeowners get wrong: assuming all impact-rated doors are the same, or that any installer can put one in correctly.
They’re not. And they can’t.
Here’s what actually matters before you commit.
“Impact Rated” in Miami-Dade Means Something Very Specific
In most of Florida, an impact-rated garage door means the door has been tested against wind pressure and flying debris. That’s good — but in Miami-Dade and Broward County, the bar is higher.
Your door must carry a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) — a certification issued after passing the most rigorous hurricane testing protocol in the United States:
A 9 lb. 2×4 fired at 34 mph hitting the door without penetration
9,000 cycles of positive and negative wind pressure without failure
Water penetration resistance under simulated storm conditions
A Florida Product Approval sticker — valid statewide — is not enough for Miami-Dade or Broward. If a contractor installs a door without a Miami-Dade NOA in the HVHZ, it won’t pass inspection. You’ll pay to have it removed and replaced.
The 3 Things That Determine Whether Your Door Actually Protects You
- The NOA number — verify it before installation
Every compliant door carries a unique NOA number verifiable in Miami-Dade County’s product approval database. Ask for it before work begins. If your contractor can’t provide it, that’s your answer. - The gauge of steel
Standard hurricane doors use 24-gauge steel. Heavy-duty models use 20-gauge — the lower the number, the thicker and more resistant. For waterfront homes, corner lots, or elevated properties, the heavier gauge is worth it. - The installer’s license
An improperly installed NOA-certified door can void your warranty and your insurance claim after a storm. The installation must be permitted and inspected. If your installer doesn’t pull a permit, walk away.
Why Clopay for South Florida
Clopay holds 45 Miami-Dade NOAs across its product lines — more than most competitors. Their WindCode® system is engineered specifically for hurricane zones and tested to withstand the direct impact of a 9 lb. 2×4 at 34 mph across 9,000 wind load cycles.
For South Florida homeowners, that track record matters. A lesser-known brand may offer a lower price but fewer approved sizes, limited warranty support, and no local service network when you need it most.
All American Doors has been a Clopay Master Authorized Dealer for over 20 years — the only certification level that guarantees factory-trained installation on every job.
