Why Does My Garage Door Reverse Before Closing?

If your garage door starts down, stops and reverses without touching anything, something is interrupting the safety beam or the opener believes it has. In most homes it is the sensors: a misaligned eye, a dirty lens, or low sun shining straight into the receiver.

Check these in this order

  1. Look at both sensor LEDs. Steady on both sides means the beam is fine; a dark or blinking light on one side points to that sensor.
  2. Clean both lenses. Dust, spider webs and salt film are enough to break the beam.
  3. Check for anything in the path at floor level: a recycling bin, a bike wheel, a parked car’s mirror, a raised drain cover.
  4. Test at different times of day. If it only fails in the late afternoon, the sun is hitting the receiver. A short shade or a repositioned bracket usually fixes it.
  5. Look at the brackets. A bent bracket from a bumped door or a ladder is the most common reason alignment drifts.
  6. Then suspect the wiring, especially if the sensors were recently replaced or the door was painted.

If the sensors check out

The next suspects are the opener’s travel limits and force settings. A door that meets a small obstruction, or a stiff door on a cold morning, can exceed the force threshold and trigger a reversal with nothing in the beam. This is common on older doors whose springs have lost tension: the opener is being asked to lift more weight than it is set for.

Do not solve this by turning the force adjustment up. The force setting exists to protect fingers and pets; raising it hides a mechanical problem that will eventually burn out the motor or break a spring.

When it is a safety problem, not an annoyance

A door that reverses at random is telling you the safety system no longer works reliably. A door that stops and stays down with an obstruction underneath is worse: the reversal is the only thing standing between a child and a moving door.
