The decision comes down to three questions: how old is the assembly, what exactly failed, and how expensive is the failure relative to the whole door. Springs and openers are almost always repair. Panels and structure are usually replace.
The parts that are always repaired
- Springs. Consumable parts. Replace the pair, never one.
- Cables and drums. Wear items; replace in pairs.
- Rollers, hinges, bearings. Cheap, and replacing them buys years.
- Openers. A modern opener on a sound door is a straightforward upgrade.
- Sensors and keypads. Always repair.
The parts that usually mean replacement
- Panels damaged by impact. A dented section cannot be straightened to seal properly, and on a rated door the certification no longer applies.
- Bent track with a bent door. One can be fixed. Both together usually cannot be brought back true.
- Rusted-through bottom sections. Structural, not cosmetic.
- Anything on a door past twenty years with original hardware. You are one failure away from replacing it anyway, and the second failure is the expensive one.
The question almost nobody asks
Is the current door rated for what the opening requires? If you are in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone and the door is not certified, repairs keep an uncertified door working. That is a different problem from a broken door, and no repair solves it.
What a fair quote looks like
Itemised: parts, labour, and what is being replaced and why. Not a single number, and not a price given over the phone for a door nobody has measured. We do not publish a price list because a spring replacement on a single-car door and a full assembly on a double door are not the same job; the estimate is free and it is itemised.
